October 7, 2013

MIW Math Mentor meeting
October 7, 2013
In Attendance: Beth Cory, Phyllis Jones, Rebecca Galli, Susie Robbins

Agenda:
Monday, October 7, 2013:
  • Review last meeting's notes. Comments/questions.  You can view them at MIW Math Mentors
    • concerns remain about the Grade 1 baseline assessment.  Is it appropriate? Is there another sort of screening toll that would be more helpful to our instruction? Is there a shorter version of the test? Is it worth the time?
    • There is a need for baseline data. Different teachers found it more or less arduous.
    • could we do it later in the year (October)?
    • Would it make sense to prioritize the test so that the most important skills are in the beginning.  That way, if students are successful with those they can move on but if not, they can stop.
  • final decisions on IXL/EDM/No games
    • decisions will be made by Tuesday, October 15
    • Is there data that says students who use this are improving?
    • Check out www.Thatquiz.com
  • comments/questions/concerns re: Intervention groups
  • Pacing guides
    • DUE Tuesday, October 15.  You don't have to finish units based on a quarter of the year, you need to see what the needs are.  If you flex group, then you must target those datas carefully.
  • Kathleen Follett's role
    • look at schedules to see if there are times in the 8:45-10:45 time frame that she could work with small groups.  This includes, focus group time, IF, and only if, the student does not need literacy intervention.
  • math facts.  What are you testing? When? How many questions in how many minutes? - ran out of time
  • PD opportunities? - ran out of time
  • Question - what happened to the document that K-8 (maybe K-12) did looking at essentials skills need by the end of each grade level?
